Minnesotans for Responsible Marijuana Regulation Hosts First Legalization Lobby Day at MN Capitol
Advocates and legislators advancing discussion around responsible, equitable legalization of adult-use marijuana in Minnesota
Minneapolis, MN – Feb. 19, 2020: Minnesotans for Responsible Marijuana Regulation (MRMR) hosted a legalization lobby day at the Minnesota Capitol yesterday where supporters and advocates heard from lawmakers about the need to responsibly legalize and regulate marijuana for adult use in Minnesota.
“Minnesotans have been clear that our current cannabis laws are doing more harm than good,” said House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler. “By creating a regulatory framework for adult-use cannabis, we can address the harms caused by cannabis and establish a more sensible set of laws to improve our health care and criminal justice systems and ensure better outcomes for communities. We will introduce carefully considered legislation in the very near future. If any state can do this right, Minnesota can.”
“We’ve seen substantive discussion about legalizing recreational marijuana accelerate dramatically in the past year,” said Leili Fatehi, Campaign Manager of Minnesotans for Responsible Marijuana Regulation. “Now that the 2020 session is underway, we look forward to our legislators taking on this important topic and advancing policy discussions that move us toward ending prohibition and righting the systemic and disproportionate harm it has done.”
Fatehi spoke to the crowd about the importance of using their voice to tell legislators that Minnesota is ready to legalize: “It’s time to have conversations about cannabis out in the open. You’re ready to talk and legislators are ready to listen.”
“At the end of the day, we need a law that legalizes marijuana,” said MN Attorney General Keith Ellison at the rally. Ellison continued, saying that there’s a need for expungement of records and economic opportunities that support communities disproportionately targeted and harmed by prohibition.
Other speakers at today’s rally included Senator Jeff Hayden, Ben Feist with ACLU-MN, and advocates Marcus Harcus with the Campaign for Full Legalization, Jeremy Sankey with MN Veterans for Cannabis, and Maren Schroeder with Sensible MN.
Since launching the campaign at the start of the 2019 legislative session, MRMR has worked with state legislators, local elected officials, and Minnesotans across the state to advance discussion and catalyze action to legalize marijuana for adult recreational use in Minnesota.
